Siraj ul Haq Resigns as Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Following Election Defeat

Siraj ul Haq, the leader of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), has announced his resignation from the party leadership after accepting responsibility for the defeat in the recent elections. Despite efforts and hard work, he acknowledged his failure to lead the party to victory.

In a tweet, Siraj ul Haq expressed his decision to step down from the post of Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami, taking accountability for the election outcome.

محنت اور کوشش کے باوجود کامیابی نہین دلا سکا، الیکشن میں شکست کی ذمہ داری قبول کرتے ہوئے جماعت اسلامی کی امارت سے استعفی دے دیا ہے۔— Siraj ul Haq (@SirajOfficial) February 12, 2024

This announcement comes after his previous call for the Chief Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to resign due to the failure to ensure transparent elections and the release of what he claimed to be fabricated results.

Jamaat-e-Islami did not secure any seats in the national assembly in the elections held on February 8, 2024, despite having a strong presence in Karachi. In that region, the party accused the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) of election rigging. Siraj ul Haq’s resignation marks a significant shift in the political landscape and leadership of the Jamaat-e-Islami.
