Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) nominee Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti has been elected as the Chief Minister of Balochistan without contest, as he was the only candidate to file nomination papers for the position on Friday.
Bugti, who has previously held the position of caretaker interior minister, presented four nomination papers for the role of Chief Minister at the Election Commission of Pakistan office.
The election for the Chief Minister of Balochistan was originally scheduled for Saturday, but Bugti was elected by default since no other nominations were received for the role.
The PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had jointly put forward Sarfraz Bugti as their chosen candidate for the leadership of the province’s assembly. This was part of a broader agreement to establish a coalition government in Balochistan and at the federal level.
Bugti had stepped down from his post as caretaker interior minister in December of the previous year and subsequently joined the party led by Bilawal Bhutto.
