PTI decides to Submit Intra-Party Election Results to Election Commission of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has taken the step to submit the results of their recent intra-party elections to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). This decision was made on Thursday and involves the election outcomes of various positions within the party, including the General Secretary and Chairman, as well as provincial party presidents.

The process was initiated by a PTI leader who is expected to present the results to the ECP today.

This submission follows a challenge by Akbar S. Babar, a founding member of PTI, who has since parted ways with the party’s leadership. Babar has lodged a complaint with the ECP, claiming the internal party elections were fraudulent and has called for the results to be invalidated. He highlighted that only 940 members participated in the voting, which represents a mere 0.11% of the party’s total membership.

On March 3, PTI announced the outcomes of its intra-party elections. According to the disclosed results, Barrister Gohar became the PTI Chairman without contest, Omar Ayub Khan was selected as the secretary-general, Yasmin Rashid was chosen as the Punjab president, and Ali Amin Gandapur was elected as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter president, all of which were uncontested positions.

The decision for PTI to carry out these intra-party elections was influenced by a Supreme Court ruling that confirmed an earlier verdict by the ECP dated December 22, 2023. The ECP’s decision had revoked PTI’s right to its symbolic electoral ‘bat’ following Akbar S. Babar’s petition, which argued that the party’s internal elections were not conducted in accordance with proper regulations.
