The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a substantial hike in electricity rates. In a recent announcement, the regulatory body confirmed an increase of Rs4.56 per unit due to adjustments for fuel costs incurred in December 2023.
This adjustment is set to place a hefty additional charge on consumers, totaling up to Rs39.80 billion. This comes at a time when citizens are already grappling with the highest ever prices for gas.
The new rate hike, as specified by NEPRA, will come into effect with the electricity bills to be issued in February 2024. It’s important to note, however, that customers of K-Electric and those classified as lifeline consumers will not be affected by this increase.
Previously, in November last year, the authority had upped the price of electricity by Rs4.13 per unit, which was also attributed to adjustments for fuel costs.
