National Assembly Set to Elect New Prime Minister Today

Today, the National Assembly is set to elect the country’s new prime minister. The candidacies of Shehbaz Sharif, who is the joint nominee from the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz and the Pakistan Peoples Party, as well as Umar Ayub Khan from the Sunni Ittehad Council, have been officially approved.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, has validated both sets of nomination papers following meticulous examination.

This development follows the National Assembly Secretariat’s earlier release of the PM election schedule, which slated the election for Sunday, March 3.

Members of the National Assembly will select the prime minister as stipulated by the Second Schedule of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007.

As per Rule 32 of the National Assembly, specifically regarding the “Election of the Prime Minister,” the process commences after the election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker post-general elections or if the Prime Minister’s office becomes vacant. The Assembly is required to elect a new Prime Minister from among its Muslim members, foregoing all other business and without any debate.
