Ghulam Mustafa Shah Takes Oath as Deputy Speaker of National Assembly

Ghulam Mustafa Shah has officially been inaugurated as the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly on Friday. Representing the coalition of allied parties, Shah secured an impressive 197 votes against his competitor, independent candidate Junaid Khan of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), who received 92 votes.

The session of the lower house of parliament was attended by notable political figures including PML-N’s Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif, PPP’s Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Asif Zardari, as well as other prominent leaders such as Umar Ayub, Asad Qaisar, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, and Khalid Maqbool Siddique.

Shah has a long history of service in the National Assembly, with his latest term spanning from August 2018 to August 2023. His political career stretches back to 2002 when he first won a seat in the National Assembly as a candidate from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) from Constituency NA-214. He achieved re-election in 2008, 2013, and again in the 2018 Pakistani general election, consistently representing the PPP and his constituency.
