Families Demand Return of Pakistani Laborers Killed in Iran

The families of five Pakistani laborers who were tragically killed in Iran have been protesting, demanding that their loved ones’ bodies be returned home for burial. They held their protest outside a government office in Muzaffargarh district, Punjab province.

These workers, named Muhammad Asif, Muhammad Shoaib, Shabbir, Muhammad Azhar, and Muhammad Asghar, had been living and working in Iran for nearly a decade. They owned property in the Sirkan area of Saravan city, close to the Pakistan border. It was here that they were attacked by armed individuals, who inquired about their nationality before shooting them.

The violence occurred at a time when Pakistan and Iran are trying to mend their relationship, following some recent clashes at the border targeting militants. A relative of one of the victims said that the attackers, who also killed four others from Bahawalpur district, seemed to be seeking revenge against Pakistan.

The grief-stricken families have spoken to local officials and asked for government help in bringing back the bodies of those killed. They, along with various community groups, are urging the government to act against those responsible for the attack.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran, Mudassir Tipu, announced on social media that two of the Pakistani citizens wounded in the Saravan incident are expected to be released from the hospital soon, although a third person will need more medical care.

In his tweet, Ambassador Tipu stated, “Our Consul in Zahidan reached the hospital and met our three brave and hardworking Pakistanis whose sacrifices I salute. Glad that 2 will soon be discharged while our third brother will require more treatment. Pakistan firmly stands with them and do whatever is required for their wellbeing.”

In response to the killings, Pakistan’s Foreign Office has called on Iran for an exhaustive investigation and the quick arrest and trial of those behind the attack.

FO spokeswoman Mumtaz Zahra Baloch emphasized the urgency in dealing with the crime, stating, “We are in touch with Iranian authorities and have underscored the need to immediately investigate the incident and hold to account those involved in this heinous crime.”
