EU Leaders Call for Investigation into Fatal Gaza Incident

European Union leaders have expressed deep concern following a tragic event in Gaza. Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, stated he was “shocked and repulsed” by the death of over 100 Palestinians, who were reportedly shot by Israeli troops during a humanitarian aid distribution. Michel urgently called for “an independent investigation” and demanded accountability for those responsible.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, also conveyed her distress over the incident, insisting on the necessity of thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding the events.

According to Gaza authorities, the death toll reached 115 Palestinians as a result of the shooting on Thursday. An Israeli source confirmed that the military had fired into the crowd, claiming the troops felt threatened by the civilians present.

In response to the EU leaders’ statements, the European Commission has decided to increase its aid to Palestinians. Eric Mamer, a Commission spokesman, announced a commitment of 50 million Euros to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) as well as a 68 million Euro boost in emergency support for Palestinians in 2024.

This financial aid comes in the wake of Israel accusing some UNRWA staff members of involvement in an attack on Israeli territories near Gaza on October 7. Despite this, the EU has chosen not to halt its funding to UNRWA while it undergoes a review.

Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNRWA, appreciated the EU’s contribution, acknowledging its significance in maintaining critical services for Palestinian refugees. The EU has imposed “a series of conditions” for the funding, which includes an audit led by the EU. The first portion of the funds is expected to be disbursed soon, with an additional 32 million Euros to be released later on.

Mamer mentioned that the extra humanitarian aid of 68 million Euros would be distributed through various organizations, such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
