The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced that Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a prominent leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), cannot participate in elections for the next five years. This decision comes after Qureshi’s recent conviction in the cipher case.
According to a statement released today, Qureshi is not only ineligible for the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8 but also for any elections that may take place in the following five-year period.
The ECP has specified that the disqualification is in accordance with Article 63(1h) of the Pakistani Constitution and Section 232 of the Elections Act of 2017.
