Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Calls for Judicial Inquiry into May 9 Riots in National Assembly Session

During his first speech in a National Assembly session, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has supported PTI’s request for a judicial commission to investigate the violent incidents that took place on May 9. These riots broke out following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan from the Islamabad High Court’s premises.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, while speaking in the assembly, agreed with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s earlier demand for such an inquiry. He emphasized that the outcome of this investigation should be accepted by all parties. He expressed his views about the importance of dialogue and reconciliation over conflict and harsh language in the assembly to help Pakistan overcome its crises.

Bilawal highlighted the significance of the National Assembly as a democratic institution, recalling his family’s legacy in its foundational history. “When you enter this building, you can see the name of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto engraved on the foundation stone,” he remarked, asserting that strengthening this institution is crucial for empowering the country and its people.

The chairman of PPP warned against weakening the Parliament, as it would compromise both democracy and the nation. He urged experienced members of the assembly to establish positive traditions and make decisions that would benefit the youth, reminding them of the nation’s scrutiny during these challenging economic times.

He also commented on the censorship of political speech, voicing his disappointment that such practices, which began in Imran Khan’s tenure, were still in place. Bilawal called for a code of conduct for politicians, stressing that cooperation is essential given the divided power within the government. He expressed his trust in Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership to improve the current state of affairs.

Concluding his address, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari congratulated the opposition leader Omar Ayub and the chief ministers of all four provinces for their election into office.
