According to a recent report, Apple’s new Vision Pro headset has room for improvement that might require several updates over the coming years. In fact, some of those who have worked on the headset believe it might take up to four generations to perfect.
Apple is known for its impressive first-generation products, and the launch of the Apple Vision Pro was no exception. However, it typically takes a few versions for Apple’s products to reach exceptional quality standards.
Early reviews of the Vision Pro suggest that while it gives a glimpse into the future of Apple technology, it’s currently hindered by the limitations of today’s tech. Some Apple insiders echo this sentiment, acknowledging that the device is a peek into what’s possible rather than the final goal.
In Bloomberg’s “Power On” newsletter, Mark Gurman described the Apple Vision Pro as more of a preview than a finished product. He noted that the headset is bulky, has a short battery life, and lacks a substantial number of dedicated apps. Gurman also pointed out that visionOS, the headset’s operating system, has more bugs than one would expect from an Apple product, even in its first generation.
Gurman suggested that Apple needs to revamp its software update process to accelerate bug fix releases. The current software feels like it’s still in beta, and it may be about a year away from being polished enough for the average consumer.
Drawing parallels to the evolution of the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, some team members within Apple’s Vision Products Group believe that it may take four iterations before the Vision Pro achieves its full potential. Until then, Gurman concluded, the Vision Pro is essentially an expensive prototype that users have the opportunity to test for Apple.
